The inhabitants of tenements, on the lower levels, obtain a comparatively abundant supply, those nigher up, but little. It must, however, be admitted, as I pointed out during my recent visit, the intermittent system was worked with much skill. Nevertheless, the inherent defects still existed, and were a source of much anxiety to all concerned.

The town's water supply system may be briefly described as follows:
The town was to be sub-divided into relatively small groups of tenements, situated at approximately the same level. Parallel to the principal main, subsidiary mains of smaller diameter were to be laid down.
Principal Mains Subsidiary Main (0) (15)The services of the various tenements were to be disconnected from the principal main, and re-connected to the rider-mains running parallel thereto, as shown diagrammatically in the annex.
17.
The advantages of the Alder-main system may be briefly summarised as follows.
(a) The principal mains would always be charged with water, under full pressure. No contaminating matter could, therefore, invade them.
(b) As the Fire-hydrants would be attached, as heretofore, to the principal main, water under full pressure, would always be available for fire-extinction.
